When a fire consumes Meg’s home, killing her parents and destroying both her fortune and her future, all she has left is the tarnished pocket watch she rescued from the ashes. But this is no ordinary timepiece. The clock turns out to be a mechanical key—a key that only Meg can use—that unlocks a series of deadly secrets and intricate clues that Meg is compelled to follow.

Meg has uncovered evidence of an elite secret society and a dangerous invention that some will stop at nothing to protect—and that Meg alone can destroy. Together with the handsome stable hand she barely knows but hopes she can trust, Meg is swept into a hidden world of deception, betrayal, and revenge. The clockwork key has unlocked her destiny in this captivating start to a trilogy.

~Author Interview~

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?

I became a writer when someone said to me, "You should write a book," and a little voice in my head said. "Yes! Yes, do that!" I ended up listening to that voice, and I didn't turn back. It ended up being the best choice for me, because I can take my career with me wherever I move.

2. What draws you to the genre that you write?

I consider what I write historical adventure with some steampunk style.  I love writing it because the stories are just pure fun. It's nice to escape into a wild story and I love the beauty and inventiveness of the steampunk movement.

3. Who were your biggest influences?

When I'm writing I tend to think about classic stories like The Wizard of Oz. I enjoy the old-world feel of classic stories, but I am always trying to capture the action and wit of movies like Goonies and The Princess Bride as well. Basically, what I write is a wonderful soup of all the stories I deeply loved and imprinted on in my youth.

4. Is there a favorite place you like to write? Any special routine when you're writing?

I am shackled to the computer in my icy cold basement. It's not very glamorous, but I'm easily distracted, so I need to be a "dungeon" writer, or I'm not nearly as productive as I need to be.  My only routine is when I finish a draft of either a large outline or a book, I like to play video games for a day or two to recharge.

5. What is your favorite movie?

I love The Lord of the Rings. I could watch it a million times and never get tired of it.

6. Favorite ice cream?

Homemade cranberry and grapefruit sorbet.

7. Favorite animal?

My favorite animal is an Okapi. I get all excited when I see one in a zoo.  I like their stripy legs.

8. Favorite book?

The one that made the deepest impression on me is probably Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

9. What is your favorite fictional character?

I am completely charmed by Captain Jack Sparrow. I can't help it. I'm smitten.

10. Is there another book in the works? If so, what can we expect?

The sequel to Legacy of the Clockwork Key will be released in Spring of 2014.  We're still settling on the official name, but my main character Meg has to face some difficult choices as she attempts to become a full member of The Secret Order in spite of the fact a very dangerous saboteur is on the loose.  I'm currently working on the third book of the trilogy, and excited to bring all the open ended threads of the series together at last.  It will also be fun to leave London for another fantastic city that will an elegant and Gothic backdrop to the final chapter of the Legacy books.
