Prep School Confidential
by Kara Taylor
Series: Prep School Confidential #1
Pages: 304
Release Date: July 30, 2013
by St. Martin's Griffin

In this breathtaking debut that reads like Gossip Girl crossed with Twin Peaks, a Queen Bee at a blue-blooded New England prep school stumbles into a murder mystery. Anne Dowling practically runs her exclusive academy on New York’s Upper East Side—that is, until she accidentally burns part of it down and gets sent to a prestigious boarding school outside of Boston. Determined to make it back to New York, Anne couldn't care less about making friends at the preppy Wheatley School. That is, until her roommate Isabella’s body is found in the woods behind the school.
When everyone else is oddly silent, Anne becomes determined to uncover the truth no matter how many rules she has to break to do it. With the help of Isabella’s twin brother Anthony, and a cute classmate named Brent, Anne discovers that Isabella wasn’t quite the innocent nerdy girl she pretended to be. But someone will do anything to stop Anne’s snooping in this fast-paced, unputdownable read—even if it means framing her for Isabella’s murder.

Author Interview:

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?
Becoming a writer actually happened by accident! I always loved writing, but I knew I had to have a practical career plan as well. I was actually going to college and studying to be an English teacher when I wrote my first book and wound up signing with an agent and getting a deal.

2. Who were your biggest influences?
My grandparents always encouraged me to read and write at a young age. My 101-year-old grandma still has the first picture book I wrote! But my biggest influence was my 11th grade English teacher, who before I graduated, told me "I want a shout-out in your first book." Before then, I never thought I had what it took to sit down and finish a book. Her words helped me realize I had a story in me after all.

3. Where do you like to write?
I'm most comfortable in my room, at my desk. But I'm most productive somewhere quiet, like my college campus library, where I wrote most of PREP SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL.

4. Do you have a special routine you like to do before you write?
I have to make myself a cup of coffee from my Keurig machine!

5. When and how did you get the idea for Prep School Confidential?
I always loved the boarding school setting, and procedural mysteries. Anne's voice came to me first, then I was really inspired by shows like Veronica Mars/The Killing/Twin Peaks.

6. Is there another book in the works?  If so, what can we expect?
Book 2 of the PREP SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL series is complete, and I'm working on Book 3 now! You can expect lots more mayhem at the Wheatley School, as Anne investigates a decades-old cold case and unearths some secrets that she wishes had stayed buried.

THIS OR THAT
1. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Milk!

2. Cats or dogs?
I have both, but I am a dog person.

3. Hardcover, paperback or ebook?
Depends on where I'm reading. If I'm traveling, e-book. If I'm at home relaxing, a paperback.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?
1. Movie?
Almost Famous

2. Ice cream flavor?
Rocky Road

3. Animal?
I want a teacup pig so badly! Pigs are so cute.

4. Book?
That's like picking a favorite child! To Kill A Mockingbird is my all-time favorite classic, but my favorite book in recent years is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

5. Actor and actress?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschannel.

6. Fictional character?

Anna from Anna and the French Kiss. She's my girl!

Pages: 320
Release Date: July 2, 2013

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.
When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined… and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

Author Interview:

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?
Some people connect songs or places with the major moments of their lives. For me, it's stories. They're my mojo. I've always known I wanted to write them. In November 2004, when I was eight months pregnant with my daughter Ruby and losing my mind with the waiting and waiting for her to get here, I decided to distract myself with NANOWRIMO. Something happened when I got to 'the end' that first time. I knew I could do it. Knowing I could do it changed everything.

2. Who were your biggest influences?
My biggest literary influences are authors who write the books that stick with me and change me somehow. Octavia Butler, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, David Brin, Nancy Farmer, Truman Capote, Margaret Atwood – I could go on forever.

3. Where do you like to write?
I like to write where I have some distance from the fray, but where I'm not totally removed from it. I grew up with eight siblings, and then was a single mom through my twenties—I have a seriously high tolerance for chaos. After living in a teeny tiny apartment with no office space, or even corner-of-the-living-room space, for a while, I got used to writing in bed. Now I'm a little bit addicted to that.

4. Do you have a special routine you like to do before you write?
I open a Diet Pepsi, check my email and whatever websites are obsessing me at the moment, and then I just get down to business. I tend to write in little bursts – a page or two, and then a break, and so on.

5. When and how did you get the idea for Viral Nation?
Viral Nation was a culmination of several different ideas that kind of collided. About a year before I wrote the first draft, I woke up with the words “Time Mariner” ringing in my head. I think I actually said them out loud, and for some reason they seemed super important, so I wrote them down before I went back to sleep. I knew I wanted to write about the relationship between siblings when one has autism. I was also really inspired by Lake Tahoe, which is a prehistoric natural lake.

6. Is there another book in the works? If so, what can we expect?
Yes! Berkley Trade bought two books, so a sequel is in the works. You can expect more Jude and Clover, for sure. Their relationship is so fun to write. Things are breaking apart in the cities, and that's going to become more obvious in the second book.

THIS OR THAT
1. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Milk chocolate—smooth and creamy!

2. Cats or dogs?
Cats are my first love.

3. Hardcover, paperback or ebook?
Paperback—cheap and old school.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?
1. Movie?
The Postman (I know, I know, I'm a fan club of one.)

2. Ice cream flavor?
Cherry Garcia.

3. Animal?
Gorillas, ever since I read Daniel Quinn's Ishmael.

4. Book?
Does a novella count? Truman Capote's “Breakfast at Tiffany's”

5. Actor and actress?
Katharine Hepburn—she will always be my Jo.

6. Fictional character?

Jo March is my spirit animal.

The Symptoms of My Insanity
by Mindy Raf
Pages: 384
Release Date: April 18, 2013
by Dial (an imprint of Penguin)

A laugh-out-loud, bittersweet debut full of wit, wisdom, heart, and a hilarious, unforgettable heroine. When you’re a hypochondriac, there are a million different things that could be wrong with you, but for Izzy, focusing on what could be wrong might be keeping her from dealing with what’s really wrong. But Izzy’s sense of humor can only get her so far when suddenly her best friend appears to have undergone a personality transplant, her mother’s health takes a turn for the worse, and her beautiful maybe-boyfriend is going all hot and cold. Izzy thinks she’s preparing for the worst-case scenario, but when the worst-case scenario actually hits, it’s a different story altogether—and there’s no tidy list of symptoms to help her through the insanity.

A lough-out-loud, bittersweet debut full of wit, wisdom, heart, and a hilarious, unforgettable heroine.

Yep, that about describes this book.  End of review.

Just kiddinggggggg. ;P

This was such a fun, entertaining read!  The writing was really good, the idea was awesome, and the story line was interesting and engaging.  It was a very heartwarming story, but also had streaks of sad events and heartbreak.  I really loved the ending as well, and how it was a happy, satisfying one.

I have to say, I really enjoyed watching Izzy grow and develop over the course of this story.  She was such a lovable, believable, realistic character, and so in-tune with teenagers these days, that I think she is really inspirational and interesting.

I’m really sorry for the short review it’s just that I just finished reading the Hunger Games Trilogy and I’m still recovering and can’t quiet put into words what I’m thinking right now haha.

But, all in all, this was a very enjoyable, fun debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what Raf has in store for us in her next book!

Quotes:

I panic and perform spontaneous karate on their genitals.

“Izzy Skymen,” she says, her eyes still on my canvas, tilting her head to the side, “you’ve got some huge girl-balls!”

Author Interview:

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?
I think writing chose me. I grew up performing comedy and musical theater, but I was always writing my own sketches, stories, songs.

2. Who were your biggest influences?
Oh so many. I loved, and still love: Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Gilda Radnor, Amy Poehler, Nora Ephron, Judy Blume, Steve Martin, Carol Brunette.

3. Where do you like to write?
Super loud coffee shops, diners, &bars for drafting. Super quiet libraries, office buildings late at night, my apt for revising.

4. Do you have a special routine you like to do before you write?
Drink coffee, disable wifi, listen to some music to get me in the right mood.

5. When and how did you get the idea for The Symptoms of My Insanity?
I’m not an outliner. I free write mostly to start. The first scene I wrote for Izzy (long before the idea of a book) was about a girl talking to a boy in a cafeteria about his cookie being raw and how he might get salmonella. I think that scene definitely jumpstarted Izzy and her world.

6. Is there another book in the works? If so, what can we expect?
Yes, I’m working on a couple different things right now. Hope to be able to share details on them soon.

THIS OR THAT

1. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Dark.

2. Cats or dogs?
Cats.

3. Hardcover, paperback or ebook?

Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters in “The Jerk.” Together, just the best!

Goodreads / Purchase
First it was SLUT scribbled all over Lizzie Hart’s locker. But one week after Lizzie kills herself, SUICIDE SLUT replaces it—in Lizzie's looping scrawl.
Lizzie’s reputation is destroyed when she's caught in bed with her best friend’s boyfriend on prom night. With the whole school turned against her, and Angie not speaking to her, Lizzie takes her own life. But someone isn’t letting her go quietly. As graffiti and photocopies of Lizzie’s diary plaster the school, Angie begins a relentless investigation into who, exactly, made Lizzie feel she didn’t deserve to keep living. And while she claims she simply wants to punish Lizzie’s tormentors, Angie's own anguish over abandoning her best friend will drive her deep into the dark, twisted side of Verity High—and she might not be able to pull herself back out. Debut author Chelsea Pitcher daringly depicts the harsh reality of modern high schools, where one bad decision can ruin a reputation, and one cruel word can ruin a life. Angie’s quest for the truth behind Lizzie’s suicide is addictive and thrilling, and her razor-sharp wit and fierce sleuthing skills makes her impossible not to root for—even when it becomes clear that both avenging Lizzie and avoiding self-destruction might not be possible.

Guest Post:

Several years ago, I was flipping through a magazine when I came across an interview with Natalie Portman. In it, the interviewer mentioned that Portman hails from the same hometown as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan (notorious partiers at the time). Why, the interviewer mused, did Natalie suppose those girls behaved so differently from her? Did she have anything to say about their behavior?

It was clear the interviewer was baiting her. All she had to do was bite. But Portman took the high road, saying (and I’m paraphrasing here, as this was a while ago):

I don’t know what kind of person I’d be without the support of my family. They are my rock.

It isn’t such a novel idea, is it? Of course a person’s support system affects her choices. Yet, so many times, when faced with a behavior we don’t understand, the inclination is to lash out, rather than try to relate. To do what’s easy, instead of what’s right.

Years later, as I sat down to write THE S-WORD, this idea still resonated with me. It might have even resonated more, considering the book’s high school setting. After all, how common is it to see a fellow student wearing an unusual outfit, and whisper quietly to a friend, “What was she thinking?” How easy is it to see a boy huddled in the park, lips clinging desperately to a joint, and mutter, “He’s wasting his life”?

After that, the names come easily: slut, burnout, loser, skank. They’re just whispers, shared between two friends. And even if they do catch on the wind and spread like wildfire, what’s the big deal? We’ve all heard that “sticks and stones” thing a thousand times. Words are only words.

They’re harmless.

Well here’s the thing. If we lived in a perfect world, where everyone had a supportive family and awesome friends, maybe being bullied at school wouldn’t have the power to ruin someone’s life. Those taunts could still hurt, scrape, and gnaw away at a person’s sense of value, but through the support of their family and friends, they’d find a way to get through it. They’d come home to hugs and encouragement and spend the night laughing on the phone with their friends. They’d ride on unicorns while Care Bears shot rainbows out of their tummies and…

You see where this is going. In reality, no one has such a perfect life. Even those with supportive families suffer through bouts of loneliness and insecurity. Those surrounded by friends still wonder if they’re truly known by the people in their lives. And what about the majority of teens, the ones without an ever-supportive family and awesome friends?

The ones whose parents work so often they never actually see their kids?

The ones who’ve been bounced in and out of foster homes their entire lives?

The ones who suffer abuse at the hands of their relatives?

In their own houses.

In their own bedrooms.

What about them?

The truth is, we often have no idea what’s going in someone’s personal life. No idea what their family is really like. No idea what they’ve already survived. And by passing on little slut-like words to our friends, even if we think no one is listening, we could be doing much more than ruining a person’s day.

We could be taking away her only safe place.

By reducing a person to an outfit, an action, a word, we could be ripping away someone’s only reprieve in a world wrought with pain, loss or abuse. And what does that leave him?

Nothing.

It’s something to think about, at least, the next time that cleverly crafted taunt forms on your lips. God, what a laugh you’ll get! People will be rolling on the floor. Then again, you could be taking away a person’s last refuge, leaving her nowhere to feel safe, untouched, undestroyed.

Is it worth it?

*A copy was provided by Scholastic for review purposes*

Something dark and terrible is brewing.  But what?  The answer will leave Cam – and readers – stunned and breathless, in this thrilling debut that must be re-read to be believed.

Yep.  That sums it up pretty well.

When I started this book I thought it would be a typical goes-to-boarding-school-people-disappear-because-someone-is-killing-the-kids and I was waiting till the end to decide if I liked how Applegate formed the mystery and chose the culprit…but then I got to the end and it went a completely different way.  I was completely surprised, but very pleased and impressed.  I never, in a million years, saw that ending coming.  The thing I was most impressed with was the staging.  Throughout the book there were events that, at the time, you thought were just events and were there for no reason, but then you get to the end and look back and go like “Oooh, so that’s what that meant.”.  This book is written in a very unique way, in that a ton of hints are dropped in the beginning and middle of the book, but nothing is actually explained until the end.  I’m just amazed that Applegate managed to pull it off.  She managed to keep my attention and pull me into the story.  I loved her humor in the book, and her writing was really good.  I liked the hint of romance in this book as well, even though it didn’t play a huge part in this book.  And, like I said, the ending was amazing.

I really liked the character development in this book.  You really got to know each character very well.  Mark, the love interest, isn’t a huge part of this book, but you still feel like you know him because of his visits to his mom.  You get to learn a bit about him.  I also liked how Applegate developed Brynne and Nora, and how we got to connect with them.  And I also loved getting to know Camden.  She was a very strong character, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her.

What with the awesome staging and story line, jaw-dropping ending, and cute writing, this is a wonderful debut, and I can’t wait to see what Applegate comes up with next.

And I finally get what the title means LOL.

#1 Favorite Quote of All Time: Nora got to the doors of Kelser first.  She lay into them without slowing down, arms out to push them open.  Her whole body smacked against them and she crumpled like a swatted fly.  I made a note to remember the doors at Kelser House opened out instead of in.  Nora picked herself up and pulled the door open.

I glanced at my watch.  7:20 in the morning.  I still had to get back down to my room, make my bed for inspection, brush my teeth, yell at Tamara for having guys in our room last night, and arrive on time for my first class.  It was going to be a busy morning.

Interview:

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?
This question made me laugh out loud. I guess the answer is, “Because I couldn’t help myself.”
I didn’t decide to be a writer any more than I decided to have freckles or a size 8 foot -- it was just part of my life skills grab bag. I imagine this is true for lots of people.  For a long time, I was uncomfortable expressing it.  But you know what?  I’m 38 years old.  I figured it was high time to let my freak flag fly.

2. Who were your biggest influences?
In college, I hardly took any courses that weren’t mandatory. Classes are expensive, yo. It never crossed my mind to try anything beyond the list I needed to graduate.  As it turned out, Creative Writing 101 filled a requirement.
I expected textbooks and a heavy reading load, similar to my other classes.  Instructions like:  Write a 15 page essay on what makes a good story, pop quizzes will count as 15% of your final grade.  But there was only one assignment.  Write thirty pages of fiction, and read them in front of your classmates.
I was in love from the first day.  That fumbling, awkward love that makes you stumble all over yourself, uncaring, because you’re so pink-cheeked giddy, thinking about it all the time.  I adored everything – listening to other people’s writing, talking about the stories, reading my own stuff out loud.  The teacher had this great vibe that made his classroom a safe place.  It’s a true and rare talent to be able to do that for someone else.
When the semester ended, I was completely moped. There was only that one creative writing class listed in the course catalog, and I’d used it up.  Desperate, I went to the teacher’s office and pretty much begged him to help me find a way to take another.  He must have thought I was a huge dope, but he just smiled and said, “All you need to do is fill out Creative Writing 102 at the registrar’s.”
I took another semester, guilty for taking a class that didn’t count towards graduation, but unable to turn the opportunity down.  When the second semester was over, I told myself it was time to get serious about my education and went back to my major.  I never took another writing class in college.  That professor gave me such a great gift, and I don’t even remember his name.

3. Where do you like to write?
I love my writing desk, but it’s not pretty.  Nobody wonders if they’ve stepped into a Pottery Barn store when they see it, what with the mismatched junk décor.  But give me a cup of coffee and some headphones, and you’ll have to shuck me like an oyster to get me out of there.  Lots of times, I’ll get inspired by song lyrics or quotes.  I’ll scrawl them on sheets of paper and tape them to the wall.  It makes the place look a little like a madwoman’s cell.  My favorite right now is one that says, “Tell the truth and run.”  It’s helping me get through this interview! J

4. Do you have a special routine you like to do before you write?
If I’m stuck, I’ll wake up early in the morning.  At four o’clock, I’ll slip downstairs and write before my brain gets a chance to turn on.   There’s something fragile about that hour, half the time I feel like I could cry from the shivers.  At the same time, all these crazy good ideas slip past my filters and onto the paper, and I’m too tired to delete them.

5. When and how did you get the idea for The Last Academy?
At the time, I was a stay-at-home mother with two young kids, preparing to have a third.  It felt like my whole life was diapers, Dr. Suess, sleepless nights, and making about a million peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.  Moms know what I’m talking about – 2:40 in the morning and a kid wakes up?  Time to mom.  Trying to make dinner?  Momming.  Sneaking into the kitchen to call someone on the phone?  That’s usually when moms are needed most.

Now, I have to confess that I love the life.  I love the play dough and the play dates and the mom friends and the Mommy & Me classes. But after five years on the job, I’d come to a place where I also needed to do something not parenting related.

“Join a book club,” a friend suggested in the park one afternoon.  “Read ANNA KARENINA, meet up at someone’s house, have a cup of tea, and gossip about made up people,”

I had time to retort, “Like I have time to read a whole book in a month,” before rushing over to stop my kid from eating park sand.

But the fantasy – adults!  Tea! Talking in a normal pitched voice!  I kept turning it around in my mind, trying to make it work.  Finally, it came to me.  I’d join a writing group.  I had no intention of actually writing.  But I’d get out of the house for a couple hours a week and have someone else read to me.  Pretty brilliant, right?  I found a group and signed up.

As it turned out, I was the youngest person in the group by thirty years.  I walked in, took one look, and thought, well, this is not for me.  But I didn’t want to be rude, so I sat down.

It was one of the funniest groups of people I had ever met.  By the end of the 90 minutes, I wanted to be adopted.  The leader turned to me and said, “Do you have something in mind to share?”  When I said no, she threw some flinty eyed appraisal my way.  “Well, you can’t join this group unless you bring something to read. Every time.”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.  I’d been reading the same chapter in a Sookie Stackhouse novel for three weeks (in fifteen minute segments, in the bathroom, while watching over small bubble bathers).  (Don’t judge.)  There was no way I could write three pages worth of coherent thoughts in two weeks. I mean, might as well send me home with NASA blueprints and ask me to come back with a spaceship.

But I really wanted to join this group, where no one had even once mentioned Dora the Explorer.  I went home and started writing what turned into The Last Academy.  So yeah – diapers and desperation to join a sixty-something clique was basically my inspiration for writing this book.

THIS OR THAT

1. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Milk chocolate.

2. Cats or dogs?
Dogs!  Slightly allergic to cats, which makes them beautiful from afar and sneezy up close.

3. Hardcover, paperback or ebook?
Paperback, because I’ve got a Velveteen Rabbit relationship with books. I fold their pages, hold them one-handed, bending them so far open the binding breaks.  If their content is scary or annoying, I throw them across the room.  I take them into a bubble bath or the beach. I use them as coasters.  It ain’t pretty being a book in Chez Applegate.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?

1. Movie?
Pulp Fiction

2. Ice cream flavor?
Cherry Garcia

3. Animal?
Does Animal from The Muppets count? (*Yes he does lol*)

4. Fictional character?
Severus Snape

Thank you, Emily, for hosting!  These questions have been a lot of fun to answer.  -Anne

Vengeance Bound

Release Date: April 2, 2013
by Simon & Schuster

The Goddess Test meetsDexter in an edgy, compelling debut about one teen’s quest for revenge… no matter how far it takes her.
Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them. Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

~Excerpt~

I break off the kiss and notice with some surprise that Niko's arms are pulling me even closer. Our bodies are pressed together, and I'm no longer cold. He nuzzles my neck, trailing little kisses down to the space where it meets my shoulder. I lean into his touch, wrapping my arms around him to steady myself, since my legs have gone weak. He kisses the hollow near my ear. "What's your secret?" he whispers, before nibbling my earlobe. I sigh, since I've lost the ability to speak coherently, and he laughs before kissing me again.

~Her Interview~

1. Why did you decide to become a writer?
I honestly think it was instinct. Recently, someone asked me when I first thought I'd like to be a writer and the answer is that I was so young that I don't remember. So, I asked my mother how old I was when I first started talking about wanting to write books and she said that even she doesn't remember. It's just what I always wanted to do.
I will say, though, that despite the fact that writing has always been my goal, it took me a long time to pursue it in a serious way. I studied creative writing in college, but afterwards I became a teacher and didn't really focus on writing at all. Though it was what I wanted to do, I didn't think I'd ever actually be able to write something anyone would want to read. After several years, it got to the point that in not putting writing at the top of my Career Priority List I started to feel like I was living dishonestly. So, I began the MFA program in Writing for Children at The New School where I several like-minded writers who really helped me prioritize it. And the rest is history. :-)

2. Who were your biggest influences?
Hands down my biggest literary influence growing up was Cynthia Voigt. I read everything I could get my hand on when I was a kid and I was in love with reading long, long before I discovered Cynthia Voigt. But when I first picked up Come a Stranger I realized I'd found something different, something deep and wise and beautiful. I'm still completely in love with her books.

3. Where do you like to write?
I usually write at home. But I am most successful writing on trains. I don't know why, but am at least three times as productive on a train as I am anywhere sitting still.

4. Do you have a special routine you like to do before you write?
No! I really want a routine. I really want to be the type of writer who writes from this-time to this-time everyday, who always re-reads or never re-reads, who writes X number of words and then stops. Any routine, really. But, alas, I can't really make one work.
I try to write at least 1,000 words a day when I'm drafting, but some days I fail horribly, other days I write close to 10 times that much.
It seems like life gets in the way of routines, and I'm trying to be okay with that and enjoy it.

5. When and how did you get the idea for Me, Him, Them, and It?
Hmm...I have a really tough time with this question, particularly for this book. Everything else I've written, I kind of know where it came from. But this one was different.
It went like this: It was September 2010 and I had my first assignment due for my MFA program in a few days. I was working on a totally different project (which I feel like I'll keep on my back-burner forever and ever at this point) and I suddenly realized I wasn't ready for anyone to read it. It was too close to my heart and I had just met these classmates! Meanwhile, this angry, lonely teenager had taken up residence in the back of my brain. Her name was Evelyn. She had unruly red hair. She was totally confused about her place in her family. So, I sat down to see if I could write a few pages in her voice and it just kind of poured out. After about three sentences, she was pregnant, and her story went from there.
I didn't set out to write about teen pregnancy. I actually set out to write about family.

6. Is there another book in the works? If so, what can we expect?
Yes! I have a second book with Bloomsbury which should be hitting shelves in Spring 2014. I don't want to say too, too much about it quite yet, but it involves friends and ex-friends, boyfriends and ex-boyfriends, big life questions, and a few Greek Islands.

THIS OR THAT

1. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Love them both!

2. Cats or dogs?
Dogs, all the way! As soon as my husband and I agree on a breed, we'll get one. :-)

3. Hardcover, paperback or ebook?
I'll read them all, but I prefer them in that order.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?

1. Movie?
I'm not too much of a movie person, but I love Judd Apatow-ish funny-with-a-dash-of-heartwarming stuff like Superbad or Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

2. Ice cream flavor?
Mint Chocolate chip! (Preferably with hot fudge to improve the chocolate-to-mint ratio.)

3. Animal?
Giraffes! They are so beautiful.

4. Book?
To Kill a Mockingbird

5. Actor and actress?
I don't have one of these. I tend to pay more attention to the fiction character than the actor.

6. Fictional character?
Aah! Of course you'd get me on this. There are so, so many I love. There's no way I could pick a fave!
