Hi Emily! Thanks for have me on your blog today. Great name by the way!
Here is a trivia question for you all: What is Emily Stokes middle name? The answer can be found on page 291 of the paperback edition.
I really think that destiny chose my career path for me - let me expand. The year was 2009, and I was involved in an accident with a really heavy box falling from a high storage place which took out my shoulder and back, and left me jobless. Unemployment rates were at it's height, so on a whim, (or without other options) I turned to my computer and sat down to write a story. Today, I'm so glad it happened.
When I think of influences, I think of books, music and my children. J.K. Rowling does an excellent job at describing details...making the story come alive. She goes beyond name the color of an object to creating a masterful picture. I also think of how I could not put down Stephen King's, Misery. I strive for that same suspense. Music is an important influence for getting me into my character's heads: Muse, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Enya. I sometimes listen to a little Nickleback, but I have to be careful there or my work would become erotica (lol). Finally, I have two kids. They are both pleased that I borrowed their best, worst, and then some, to create some really great imaginary characters.
We live out in the country, and I write at our dining room table, in front of a huge sliding glass door. If you were here with me, you'd recognize some of the scenery in my book :)
It took me a while to come up with the plot for A Kiss for Emily. I started three or four other story lines, but they were boring, typical, and lacked pizzazz. Then the day came, out of no and the story appeared on my pages. I still remember that like it was yesterday! I met Sam and Emily first. Then came Alex. He's my most complex character. What is happening off the pages is just as important as what's on the pages. Then there is Kat, aka Kitty. She is the little sister who is a favorite among many readers.
Five random things about me: 1) My feet are usually cold. 2) I secretly like pants with chains on them. 3) I write daily writing tips on Twitter 4) I think my age sounds scary. 5) I love the beach.
I have two favorite movies: The Titantic (when it came out in the '90's) and the first pirate move, Curse of the Black Pearl.
Favorite food: Egg, bacon, cheese-burger on fried white toast. Bring it on! ( I started making these in the '80's)
Team Gale or Team Peeta: After the first book? I'd have to say that I feel sorry for Gale. He's in a helpless place, just forced to watch. With so many people taking sides, I am also curious how readers will continue to face-off with my book. Team Alex or Team Sam? I have heard some of the comments out there...readers are nervous!
Yes! There are more books on the way! A Kiss for Emily is Book One of the Emily Stokes Series. If I can keep on track, I hope to have book two, A Gift for Emily, out in time for Christmas. Please be sure to be-friend, like, and follow me to keep up to date on all the latest new.
After a good brushing and other bedtime rituals, I headed back to my bedroom. On the way, I noticed a dim glow coming from Kat's room."Are you still up?""Yeah, I'm not tired." She was watching a video on a small TV that sat upon her dresser."Guess what?" I taunted."You hit your head and now you don't remember who you are.""Whatever," I sneered. "I met someone today." I whispered, almost like it was a secret."Kat sat up in her bed. "Who?""His name is Sam. Come here, I want to show you something. He have me a flower." I grabbed her small hand and pulled her out from under her quilted bedspread. Grabbing my shirt from the back of my desk chair, I reached into the pocket to retrieve the delicate red bud from its place of safety. Only there were no soft petals. Instead, I felt...grit. I pulled the pocket open wide and peered into its depths. It was filled with dark, dry dirt."That's strange.""What is?""I must have lost it," I said disappointingly, shaking the dirt out into the wastebasket."It's just a stupid flower.""And you're too little to understand."She crossed her arms. "All right, tell me more.""He's the cutest guy I've ever seen in my life. No one at T-West even begins to hold a candle next to him.""Oh," she said. Then added, "Did ya kiss him?"I imagined him and me in a romantic first kiss. "No."Her eyes dimmed."But I'd like to."Kat's nose crinkled.
