Author Interview: Maria V. Snyder + Giveaway

Hello everyone!  Today I am so freaking excited because I will be joined by one of my favorite authors ever, Maria V. Snyder.  She is an amazing talent and has written 9 books, and while I haven't read all of them yet, the ones I have I've really liked.  I hope you all will stick around and read my author interview with her, and then I will have an awesome giveaway of her latest release!! :)

Inside Out is on my TBR
Outside In is also on my TBR

Scent of Magic is scheduled to come out early 2013

She has a ton of books out and almost all of them I have loved.  Seriously guys, if you haven't read any of her books before, YOU.  MUST.  She is so amazing and you will love each and every one of her books you read.  Okay, enough blabbing about how much I love her books.  On to the interview! :P

~Interview~

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm married with two teenagers so I have unlimited texting :) and I have a black cat named Valek. I've been writing for the past 17 years and have 9 books published since 2005. I enjoy playing volleyball and doing photography and have a Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology from Penn State and a Masters Degree in Writing from Seton Hill University.

2. Who were your biggest influences?
I always loved to read and I started reading Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries, followed by Dick Francis and Agatha Christie - so my earliest influences were mysteries. I think Dick Francis had the biggest impact since I write first person point of view and like to end my chapters with little mini-cliff hangers to keep my readers...er...reading :) I've gotten many a late night email from a reader "yelling" at me for keeping her up all night ;> I'm not sorry. Not at all.

3. If you could have a different career what would it be?
A criminal psychologist - I find the criminal mind fascinating!

4. How do you always manage to write a great cast of characters?
Thank you for the compliment. I don't stress too much about my characters, they develop on the page as I'm writing and I find out all fun things about them as the story progresses. They always manage to surprise me and I always make sure to focus on the characters when crafting a story - IMO they are the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of any story. Because if you don't care about the characters you don't care about the plot.

5. What is your favorite movie?
The Princess Bride - it has it all - swords, horses, action, mystery, suspense, pirates, giants, romance, and ROUSs what's not to love?

6. Favorite food?
Donuts!

7. Are there going to be new books for the Study and Glass series?
Eventually - I'd like to do another story about Yelena and Valek, but this time focusing on Valek's point of view, with flashbacks to his past.

8. What is your next book? What's it about? When is it coming out?
My next book is SCENT OF MAGIC. It's the second book in the Healer Series. The story picks up about a week after TOUCH OF POWER ends. Avry's going to take advantage of her new "status" (I don't want to give it away) and go undercover. All out war between Estrid and Tohon is on the edge of breaking out and trouble brews from the northern wildlands. This book will be different than my others as there will be scenes from Kerrick's point of view as well as Avry's.

  1. All of these series look amazing. The only one I'd heard about is Touch of Power, but I'm going to have to add Maria's books to my TBR pile now!

  2. Kick butt character? The one standing out to me right now is Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door. She was so quirky and fun and she makes me wish I knew how to sew my own clothes. Kick-butt doesn't necessarily have to be street though, right?

  3. Ah! My favorite movie ever is The Princess Bride, too. And now my 4yo is in love with it, too. She always asks to watch the "Buttercup" movie. :)

And gasp! A story from Valek's POV?!? I'm swooning already!!!!!!!

Great interview! I love everything I've read of Snyder's -- which is everything but the Glass series -- but I don't actually own any of them. Thanks for this opportunity! :D

  6. Hmmm, kick-butt character? There have been so many. I love Eve Dallas and her husband, Roark, in JD Robb's In Death series. Or Ryan Cawdor and his whole group in James Axler's Deathlands series.
I would have added Tris from Divergent, but after reading Insurgent, she has dropped out of my kick-butt characters list.

Thanks for sharing Maria with us, and introducing me to 3 new series that I now need to check out.
